There Will Never Be Another

“What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate” – Cool Hand Luke

When is there no turning around, no turning back, no chance of reconciliation?
“Fool me once, shame on you.  Fool me twice, shame on me.”
How many times can a heart forgive?  An infinite amount.
How many times will the mind forgive?  Never again.

The heart may hope, but the mind knows the truth.
And the mind, with hopes to protect the heart,
tries to prevent the heart from truly trusting and believing.
But the heart is an eternal optimist, praying for his redemption.

Years of miscommunication, no communication, silence
have destroyed any relationship there could have been.
Years of half-truths, mis-truths, and straight-out lies
have worn away any trust that may have once existed.

To call him out on his behavior
would require an inner strength
that doesn’t want to be called forth.
Not for this effort anyhow, maybe another.

Praying for his redemption,
but instead a card arrives in the mail.
No personal note, signed with his first name.
The heart breaks and the truth is realized.

Without trust, there is no honest communication.
Without honest communication, you’ll never build trust.
Without faith, you’ll have neither.
And with neither, you’ll never have faith.

The wedding was an occasion, a brief moment in time.
Never to be repeated, never to be replayed.
There will never be another
and you were not there.

Author’s Note: Although there was a noticeable absence at our wedding, it was still the most amazing day of my life.  To be surrounded by the family that was there and my friends as Matt and I made our vows to one another was simply incredible.  It was more powerful than I ever could have imagined and more humbling than I had expected.
